Cycle Safety

4th Feb 2026

Dave and Helen of bike Heros delivered the first of five sessions on Cycle Safety to 3rd and 4th class today. This session was classroom based and focused on many areas of safety around cycling.
Dave also explained about the four checks to be made before you go cycling.

  • The first is the weather-make sure it is suitable.
  • The second is the clothes check-appropriate items should be worn including a high visability vest.
  • The third check is the helmet, that it fits securely.
  • Finally is the bike check.

Dave explained about the M check on the bicycle. This starts with the back wheel, ensuring it is correctly pumped, has a good grip and brakes in very good working order. Next is the saddle-ensuring it is at the correct height and is secure. The third step is the pedals, which should have reflectors, good grip and a good rust free chain.  The fourth step is the handlebars which again should be at the correct height and the brakes should be in very good working order. The final part is the back wheel which again should have the correct pressure and good grip. This can be checked with your  thumb. Cyclists should always have a flashing white light on the front of the bike and a flashing red one on the back.

Next week, Dave and Helen will take the children out in the yard for the first practical session. They are really looking forward to it.
