Meet the scientist.
3rd and 4th classes took part in a fascinating webinar on Wednesday.
The webinar was organised by The Marine Institute and was part of the ‘Meet the Scientist’ series. The title of the show was ‘Why is the deep ocean one of the most fascinating places on earth?’.
The pupils were really engaged as a marine biologist from Galway university took us all on a fascinating journey of exploration and knowledge.◊
She explained that she does a lot of her work 1000 metres below the surface of the ocean!
We saw pictures of her boat and learned about octopuses and deep sea coral.
We learned how coral can protect itself by lighting up to ward off predators.
We also learned that chemicals released by coral can be used to help advancements in medicine and in human health.
Finally,a discussion took place on how best we can protect the ocean and its creatures.
We look forward to the next webinar.
